In America, it’s Thanksgiving weekend. For many families, that means feasting, relaxing in front of the television, enjoying each others’ company, and reflecting on our many blessings.

It also means the start of weight-gaining season.

You know you have to work hard to keep from getting madly out of shape in the next few weeks. If you already have a personal vitality program, good for you… the battle will be easier. If not, it’s probably an excellent time to start.

Aside from the obvious utility of doing it to help fight holiday weight gain, recent years’ research confirms many of the intuitive benefits of exercise. The Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health has pronounced a regular exercise regimen reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension), increases bone density (and bones’ resistance to breaking), and makes that good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein, or HDL) more easily circulate through your body. Not only that, the Report confirms what we all know: exercise improves your physical appearance.

Exercise is very good for us, whether it be walking, running or bending and stretching at your local gym or in the privacy of your own home. Exercise relieves stress and anxiety and exercises your heart making it beats faster and harder, exerting a stronger push of blood around our body and through the organs of your body such as your kidneys and liver, which gives them more oxygen and they perform better, which makes you feel better,especially over time, while preventing the onset of diseases such as heart disease, arthritis and onset of diabetes. Pain associated with arthritis can feel better which can make you feel more fitter and want to exercise, because you are able to move faster and your body doesn’t ache so much since your joints and limbs will be functioning better.

Being fit means that you are able to participate in everyday activities and life, work and recreation without being too fatigued, while still having a bit of energy reserved in our body. Being fit allows you to enjoy a better life style than that of people who are not so fit. Physical fitness takes time to achieve. Regular physical activity is the way a person becomes physically fit. Walking, running, attending a gym, or attending a dance class are all ways to become physically fit, while some people prefer to exercise at home in privacy.
